Independent Martial Arts (IMA) is a non-political democratic group teaching traditional Japanese Shotokan Karate whose members are from all walks of life. IMA focuses on the values and principles of Traditional, Sporting & Tournament, Practicle Self Defence and Functional Advanced Combat Orientated Karate from the ground up.

The group’s origins were founded in 1993 by it's current  Chief instructor Andrew Nightingale who spent many years trying to create a balanced system of teaching and training which lives by its own well used line: “Always room for improvement”. Sensei Nightingale's introduction to Martial Arts was through Judo as a schoolboy in 1979 followed by Shotokan Karate in 1980/81.

He went on to have a successful national and international competition career spanning over 10 years from 1992  and now tries to pass on and promote personal and physical development whilst creating the right environment for the character to evolve through experiences collected on the mat, in life and the teaching and learning of Karate.
A note on the behalf of the student to always keep with them is “Karate is simply Karate”, hard work and practice and…, yes you have guessed it, hard work and practice at whatever age or level you may be. We look forward to meeting you soon!

Independent Martial Arts / Nightingale Shotokan Karate have been training and teaching in Halifax since back in the 80's. We provide classes in Shotokan Karate, Karate-do, Karate jitsu, Karate jutsu and we have a full martial arts class program for adults and children of all ages and abilities. Our classes range from complete beginner to intermediate and through to advanced practice. We also have a basic bo-justu program (combat staff training) for those who show an interest in learning this weapon.

We have a complete beginner package and program available to help encourage commitment to training from the outset at a reduced and reasonable cost which contains everything a new student will need to start training, details of which can be found on the blog page.

松 涛 館 空 手   IMA about us, our karate-jutsu club in Halifax and how we came to be   松 涛 館 空 手

A short simple history of how we came to be from Calderdale School of martial Arts Club to Calder Valley Karate to Calder Valley Karate & Judo to Independent Martial Arts - This might just take a while to complete and condense for easy reading, its almost 30 years of karate memory..., but its on the to do list!
